It’s Friday, loyal readers, which means the moment you’ve all been waiting for is finally here. Ok, that might be a bit dramatic. Let’s say it’s the moment you’ve thought about no less than twice, but no more than four times over the last 3 days. Does that sound about right? Well, I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. Ok, that’s a lie. I’m going to keep you in suspense for as long as it takes you to figure it out from the following story. Here we go!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can’t believe it’s happening again.
Those words bounced around my mind as if they were the only thoughts inhabiting the place. My feet followed suit as they took turns propelling my knees up and down. This wasn’t my first rodeo, yet the nerves I thought I had trained well enough were now disobeying my commands. I tried to calm them, but it was no use. They were operating on their own this morning and there was nothing I could do about it.
Jen sat next to me, inexplicably relaxed. At least that’s how she appeared from the outside. Much like a duck on the water however, there was no doubt that below the surface those little feet were going a mile a minute. I suppose no matter how much you prepare yourself for something like this, when the moment comes it’s nearly impossible to control your emotions.
Walking into the room brought on a sense of deja vu, and for a brief moment I wondered if perhaps this was a dream. If I pinch myself right now, will I wake up? The moment quickly passed as the door behind me closed and Jen and I took our seats next to one another. I scanned the room. I’d been here before, but it had been quite a while since our last visit and there were changes. I rested my elbow on the counter top to my left and noticed the new, big screen TV on the wall in front of me.
“Wow, looks like they’ve upgraded since the last time.” I said to Jen as she attempted to make herself comfortable.
The door opened and a woman we had never met before entered and introduced herself. She made small talk as she took a seat to Jen’s right and began preparing for the job at hand. She asked the standard questions which we answered quickly with a side of nervous laughter. This was the big moment, she didn’t really expect witty repartee, did she?
The lights dimmed and the TV turned on. I could feel my heart pounding so forcefully in my chest I could swear it was audible to anyone in the room. Jen took a deep breath as she reached over and gripped my hand. The feel of her fingers in mine sent me flashing back to the first time. My heart beat loudly that day too. God, how it was loud!
Just then, I was brought back to the present by a sound so similar to that of the drum beat in my chest. This sound was much lighter and quicker however, but absolutely recognizable. Another heartbeat. I felt Jen’s hand squeeze mine and as if it were some sort of signal, I knew it was safe to look up at the TV. And there it was. The unmistakable, undeniable, unbelievably beautiful profile of our baby.
That’s right dear friends, The Wordslinger is going to be a Daddy…again!!
And here’s the proof.
Well its about time you stopped over to say congrats! I was quickly moving the name Michael down on our list of possibilities…but now it’s climbing again. Haha!
Since I’m replying to your comment, I would assume it’s back in the top 2??
You know, the name Michael means “One who is like God?” Not that it’s even close to true in my case!
Congrats on the great news! And far better you than I. (Though, since my wife no longer has the … er … “equipment” to get pregnant, maybe BETTER me. Imagine the cash I could get from the National Enquirer! 😀 )
In all seriousness, congrats. And GET OUT OF THAT HOUSE. Time for The Wordslinger (and Mrs. Wordslinger) to get a bigger home.
sportsjim81 said:
Thanks buddy! And I agree, things are getting rather snug in the old bungalow. But we have a plan for that and it still needs time to develop…unfortunately. Might be converting the shed into bedroom number 4!
Ms. Vic said:
Congratulations guys!!!!! You two are super great parents and you make gorgeous kids together. I might be wrong, but this one looks just like Izzy. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. We’re all really happy for you both. Keep us posted please!
sportsjim81 said:
Thanks Ms. Vic. I’m working on an idea for some sort of weekly update that will be fun for everyone to keep up with. Might also do one of those baby pools to guess the sex since we are going to go the surprise route again. I’ll definitely keep everyone in the loop!
Actually, I was taking a cue from you, and trying to increase my Twitter participation. Being the first to see your post was a bonus. Oh hey, I forgot to say “I was first! First commentor, right here folks!” (raises arms and points fingers down to the top of my head).
